About the Meghalaya Tourist Buddy Scheme

The Tourist Buddy Scheme is a strategic initiative by the Tourism Department under the Meghalaya Tourism Policy 2023. It aims to enhance tourist safety, security, and overall visitor experience while actively involving local communities in monitoring, site management, and destination promotion.

Selected Tourist Buddies will act as local guides and site managers, providing accurate information, managing tourist queries, promoting locations on social media, assisting during emergencies, and reporting infrastructure needs directly to the District Tourism Promotion Society (DTPS) and the Directorate of Tourism.


Roles and Responsibilities of a Tourist Buddy

The primary duties of the selected candidates will include:

  • Tourist Facilitation & Promotion: Greeting tourists, resolving queries, guiding them on local culture, history, and souvenir shops, recommending accommodations, and encouraging social media/Google reviews.
  • Site Operations & Maintenance: Keeping local tourist sites clean, overseeing public convenience facilities (toilets), managing waste disposal, preventing traffic congestion, and keeping monthly visitor records.
  • Safety & Emergency Handling: Enforcing site rules, providing basic first-aid, ensuring safety equipment (life jackets/guards at water bodies) is available, and reporting emergencies to the DTPS Nodal Officer.
  • Site Assessment Reports: Submitting quarterly reports on site conditions, including road connectivity, illumination, parking availability, and signages.

Eligibility Criteria for Meghalaya Tourist Buddy Recruitment

Candidates must satisfy the following minimum qualifications and conditions as on the date of application:

1. Domicile Requirement

  • The applicant must be a resident/domicile of one of the specific villages where the tourist destination is located.
  • Proof of Domicile is mandatory.

2. Educational Qualification

  • Minimum qualification: Class 12th Pass (Higher Secondary) from a recognized board.
  • Note: Educational criteria may be relaxed for candidates from remote areas on a case-to-case basis at the department's discretion.
  • Proof of Educational Qualification is required.

3. Age Limit

  • Candidates must be between 18 to 30 years old as on the date of application.
  • Valid identity proof (Voter ID, Passport, etc.) must be provided.

4. Desirable Skills & Preferences

  • Strong communication skills in English, Hindi, and local languages (Khasi, Garo, or Pnar).
  • Proficiency in using smartphones, mobile applications, travel tools, and digital platforms (e.g., MTIME App).
  • Physical stamina to handle outdoor conditions and basic knowledge of first-aid.

Selection Process

The selection will be conducted systematically through the following steps:
